Smokey and the Bandit was only Field's third feature film role, and she quickly pivoted her success on the big screen into Academy Award gold when she won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1979's Norma Rae. Field first made a splash as the lead role in the TV series The Flying Nun in the late '60s, and continued to have success on TV throughout the ensuing decade. Her role as Carrie in Smokey and the Bandit allowed her to be the perfect comedic foil for yhe Bandit, and Field had no trouble playing the fish-out-of-water runaway bride who was just along for the ride. Reynolds continued to work in film and TV up until his passing at the age of 82 in 2018, and posthumous releases with the actor continued until 2021.īefore appearing in the cast of the Reynolds Smokey and the Bandit films, Field had spent the bulk of the 1970s becoming a television icon. Besides his typical action/exploitation roles that made him famous, Reynolds also began taking on more serious roles as he got older, and was even nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn in 1997's Boogie Nights. Earlier films like 1972's Deliverance had shown what he could do, and Smokey and the Bandit made him a full-fledged movie star.įollowing his turn as the Bandit, Reynolds found great success making other films with director Needham, and projects like The Cannonball Run in 1981 were smash hits for the duo. Many of Reynolds' most iconic roles came before he got behind the wheel of Bandit's Trans Am, and he would land many more before his career was over. Embodying the laid-back and aloof attitude of the Bandit to perfection, Reynolds wasn't far out of his comfort zone as the charming lead. Reynolds' appearance in Smokey and the Bandit was a large reason why the film was successful, and his star power and charisma elevated the cast and ultimately made the film work.
